Girlfriend Field Trip! Relax…Refresh…RoadTrip!
Mt. Shasta Lavender Farm and Living Memorial Sculpture Garden
A good friend posted on Facebook that she and another friend were going to the Mt Shasta Lavender Farm the following Wednesday and anyone who wanted to join them was welcome! I was free that day so decided to come along. It was a fun day and reminded me that there are interesting things to see in our own regions and sometimes we just need a good ol’ fashioned field trip!!
The Mt. Shasta Lavender Farm is located outside of Montague, CA about an hour and a half drive from Medford, Oregon where we all live. There were four of us, so we piled into one car but not before enjoying some homemade lavender scones made by good friend Janice Cox of Natural Beauty at Home. For Sweet Lavender Scone Recipe click here.
The Mt. Shasta Lavender Farm is in a beautiful setting with spectacular views of Mt. Shasta!
There is a stylish building that definitely reminded me of being in Provence which houses a small boutique where they sell all kinds of lavender goods and free cups of lavender lemonade – delicious!
There is a section that is French lavender and one that is English lavender. They provide nice baskets and scissors for you to collect the lavender.
In the middle is a lavender labyrinth which is nice to walk through and meditate or pray.
There are nice tables and chairs with an arbor or umbrellas, a nice place to eat if you bring a picnic lunch.
Also suggest bringing a hat and sunscreen as it can get quite hot and there is no shade in the fields.
Another friend had mentioned that since we were going out that way we should stop at the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden in Weed, CA. It was just a 10-15 minute drive from the Lavender Farm.
The sculpture garden was founded by veterans in 1988 to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives in war. The sculpture garden has 11 beautiful and thought provoking sculptures made by artist Dennis Smith. They are spread out around a forest of trees planted by hundreds of volunteers.
We had not brought a picnic lunch to eat at the Lavender Farm so by this time we were starving. We were close to Weed, CA and had heard that the Hi-Lo Cafe was good place to get a bite to eat so we stopped there for a late lunch. We absolutely loved the retro sign and vintage decor inside.
It was a large menu with choices from breakfast all-day to hamburgers, salads, fried chicken and more. Our waitress was extremely nice and friendly and made our molten volcano dessert extra special for us!
All of us have lived in the Rogue Valley for almost 20 years and had never been to these great gems just a 1.5 hour drive away! Loving the Girlfriend Fieldtrips – Relax, Refresh, Roadtrip!!
This brought back plenty of memories for me. Thanks! Can’t wait to visit Seville again. I am currently writing up the story of my two visits to Andalucia. It was a fabulous part of Spain.
Glad you enjoyed it, and that it helped bring back such great memories! I agree, Andalucia is a fabulous part of a fabulous country!
Sounds like you’re having a good adventure, even if the hotel wasn’t ideal. I’d personally love to visit Spain.
Thanks Emme! You would love Spain! After Italy, it is my second favorite country!
That was a great account of your stay.. `i’ll be visiting Sevilla again next April for the Feria.. Flamenco Week! I took my Philippine girlfriend to it last April and I’ve had my arm twisted to take her again. I’d bought her a lovely dress for 190 euros and she was hooked.. especially when she was asked to stop several times so her photo could be taken.. But Sevilla is a lovely city anyway and there is still so much to see and do there.
Glad you enjoyed the blog. Have a fabulous time in Seville at the Feria! Should be fabulous!
This was great to read about as my husband and I will be there in October and I am still planning it. Have you written about your trip to San Remy de Provence? We will be there before Spain and I would like to read about your stay there.
Leah – For some reason I never did get that written and posted, but you have inspired me to get that done!! I still have all my notes and pics. If you have any specific questions I can answer, you can email me at judy@fromhometoroam.com. We stayed in St. Remy and visited Les Beaux, Avignon, Pont du Gard, Aix, Gordes, Roussilon, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Menerbes, Cassis and did a wine tour with Olivier Hickman of Wine Uncovered in the region of Chateauneuf de Pape.
Hi Judy,
Thank you very much for sharing! I very much enjoy reading your blog. BTW, I am from Vietnam but have not been back since I left my country in 1975. I do plan to go one day but my heart is in Europe. I have been to England, France, and Italy but wanting to go to Spain next. My thoughts are Barcelona, Granada, Seville, and Madrid. However, the more I read about the Andalucia area, the more I’m thinking about extending in this area and skipping Barcelona perhaps?
Any thoughts?
Thanks Judy!
Stephanie – Glad you enjoyed the blog. We absolutely loved your country, Vietnam. Hope to go back again some day. I have not been to Madrid yet so hard to comment on that. I absolutely loved Barcelona – probably my favorite European city after Rome! I think a lot would depend on how much time you have. Barcelona is a little further away than Madrid from Andalucia. As you saw we did our time in Andalucia in a week (Granada, Cordoba and Sevilla). If we had more time there is much more we would have liked to have seen. If you have two weeks you could skip Madrid and do Barcelona and Andalucia. If less than two weeks then probably would be best to do madrid and Andalucia.
