Hotel Standard – NYC Meatpacking District

My twenty year old daughter and I just spent a week at The Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District.  This was our fourth trip to NYC in the past seven years.  On previous trips we always stayed on the Upper EastSide or Midtown, but this time we were looking to stay in a new area.  I found a pretty good deal on Jettsetter.com (Gilt.com’s travel website).  It was one of their “Flash Sales” which means the price is even lower than normal but usually only lasts for three to four days.  The only drawback is that you do have to prepay (no refunds) so be sure you are definitely going!!

We really liked staying in the Meatpacking District.

We found it close enough to leisurely walk through the West Village and even to Soho (though took the subway back).  The A-C-E subway is two (longer) blocks away, but not too far and we often did not need to make any transfers, or at most just one. The Meatpacking was fairly quiet during the week, although more crowded on Saturday and Sunday.  Also very close to Chelsea Market for early morning coffee/croissant or nighttime snack.  Tons of restaurants and shopping right there.  In addition, entrance to the Highline is around the corner for a nice morning walk, and we also had a nice walk along the Hudson River down to the World Trade Center site one morning.

We booked the standard King room and it is quite large (and not just for NYC standards).  There is a built in three-sided couch with large coffee table, so tons of space to store luggage and shopping bags =).

The exterior wall is floor to ceiling windows with fabulous views and keeps the room bright and cheery.  Our view was of the Hudson River.  There is a sheer curtain or heavy curtain to close as needed.

There were big mirrors in room and bathroom, plus a full length mirror in bathroom.  The bathtub and shower are quite large – there are louvres to close off the shower/bath from the main room, but there is no door on the shower for privacy so be sure you are with someone you know really well!

There is a separate toilet compartment and a sink with fairly good counter space to the right.  There were always plenty of towels left for us, which I really appreciated.  It was quite hot at the beginning of the week and we took showers twice a day.

We stayed on the fourth floor but did not have any problem with street noise.  Frankly the hotel is not located on a busy wide street – mostly busy for the club upstairs – but no cars driving by fast.  We did have some noise from the Biergarten below but it was not music, just the din of people talking.  We never had any problems falling asleep or being woken up in the middle of the night.

We found the service to be very friendly and helpful.  We ate breakfast one morning in the restaurant there and it was good, though standard breakfast fare.  (I strongly recommend Mailiano’s in Gramercy Park hotel for best breakfast or Locanda Verde in Greenwich hotel for great brunch).

There were a few negatives.  Wifi was free, which was nice, but a bit spotty sometimes.  The closet was rather small, and half of it could only be used to hang shorter things, such as shirts because the fridge and safe were in the way for longer things.

There were no drawers, just this small cabinet with two cubbies.  I thought the finishes were not that great, and bathroom amenities not that plentiful, ie. no shower cap.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and if I could get another good rate I would stay here again.

I enjoyed this blog. We love NY and have made many trips to the big apple. We have never stayed in the Meatpacking area and, like you have usually selected mid-town or the Theater district. The hotel looks interesting and your choice of photos is very helpful to provide a real feel for it. Being the foodie I am, I appreciate a good restaurant review, and would have liked more of them for this area. (We all have our fave things to look for! 🙂

And I really appreciated the tip on the “Flash Sales.” Will give it a try. Again, thanks for the great review.
